About

My journey in photography began when I bought my first SLR (Nikon F601) at age 20 back in the days of film.  My original motivation was gymnastics photography, and for that purpose, my first 'real' lens was the magnificent Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8 push-pull zoom. Then a change in career, kids, and the convenience of consumer digital photography came along and the SLR sadly started collecting dust. (I still have it though!)  Thankfully, digital SLRs finally became affordable to me around 2011.  Very exciting :)  That first digital SLR was a pre-loved Nikon D90.  The technology has just kept improving, and I have progressed through a D7000 (cropped sensor) and am currently using the D610 (full frame).  Over the years, I have accumulated a fair range of Nikon-mount lenses so I have remained a Nikon user.  Learning digital post-processing techniques has also been a part of the journey.  From the very beginning, photography has been as much about what happened in the darkroom as it has been about framing the scene, the prevailing light, and how much of that light you decide to let through the shutter.  CLICK!

Photography is a hobby and a passion.  I am grateful to have a very rewarding day job!  But in recent years, it has often been suggested "Russell, you should sell your photos!"  Finally, with a loving nudge from my big sister, I have decided to give it a go.

I get a buzz out of seeing things from a different point of view and trying to capture and share it.  Whether it be a frozen moment of time that would normally go missed ... looking 'up' instead of 'out' ... the colour explosion of a sunrise or sunset ... the miniature mathematical detail of a flower ... the iridescence of a dragonfly wing ... or the gorgeous crater detail of Earth's constant companion, the Moon ... beauty lurks everywhere.  As I write this, The Flower Duet from Delibes' opera Lakmé happens to be poetically playing in the background.  Life is beauty !!!
